This is the rough and tumble story of David’s ten years in the Top End; Australia’s remote Cape York and Torres Strait in the 1970’s-1980’s. His job was to implement programs to keep our exotic diseases of animals like Foot and Mouth Disease and Rabies and his boss told him to ‘walk the beaches’ of this harsh and rugged and starkly beautiful area. He did! The book is full of characters he met along the way and told with an odd-beat humour. Rough as Guts also has plenty of drama and serious discussion on the future of such a fragile area.
